Description: “The City of Lynn, in collaboration with the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA), undertook a project to replace the 1923 Thurgood Marshall Middle School, which served grades six through eight. The MSBA and city voters approved the $92 million, 181,847-square-foot school to house 1,100 students after extensive community outreach.

Active MBTA tracks were located behind the new school location, so substantial coordination was required to ensure the tracks remained unobstructed. The project included costs associated with site acquisition, abatement and demolition of the existing school, and associated site restoration. Construction lasted two years; abatement and demolition of the original 1923 school was completed during the summer.

The new Thurgood Marshall Middle School was designed to meet LEED Gold standards. It was built 49 percent more energy efficient than Massachusetts energy code requirements. Substantial completion was achieved six weeks ahead of schedule allowing the school to open five months earlier. The project was delivered approximately $4 million under budget and with no change orders.” -NV5
